The Student Government Association elected a new Vice President of Student Life Sunday night, following the Thursday resignation of former VP Angela-Jean Palchowski for “personal reasons,” according to SGA President John W. Foster.

Tyler McCardell, junior pre-med major, will be moving from his previous role as senator and president pro-tempore to fill the student life position. He will be responsible for helping to organize the annual Night of Lights Christmas event on campus and will advocate on behalf of the students to “ensure the quality of [Parkhurst] food and prices are fair,” according to McCardell.

“[McCardell] has shown tremendous leadership during his three years in the SGA,” Foster said. “I look forward to working with him in his new role…”

According to McCardell, he has been involved with the SGA “since day one of freshman year,” and served two terms as Class Council president and two terms as Finance Committee chairman.

“I’m excited to take on this new role,” McCardell said. “I have plans and initiatives to put in place, and I will listen to the needs of the student body.”

Those plans include investigating the presence of smoking on campus, which McCardell said several students have voiced concerns about.

“I feel many students feel there is too much smoking on campus,” McCardell said.

He said he will also continue the work of his predecessor, Palchowski.

“She was focused on school spirit events, so we will definitely continue to do that,” McCardell said.
