Duke Sports Staff

The women’s swimming team matched its highest finish in DU history at the Atlantic 10 Championship before spring break on Feb. 21. The Red & Blue placed third of 11 teams at the three-day event behind strong performances from a number of Dukes. In total, the Red & Blue broke all five school relay records and set or tied five new individual school standards.

Redshirt junior Taylor Kane gave the Dukes a strong start at the championship meet, finishing in 10th place in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Freshmen Lexi Santer, Abby Watson and sophomore Morgan Fink followed up Kane’s performance with a strong showing in the 200-yard backstroke. Santer finished in second place in 2:00.10, a new school record, while Watson and Fink followed shortly behind in fourth and sixth place, respectively.

Junior Samantha Ray turned in a school record (50.51 seconds) in the 100-yard freestyle, good enough for fourth place. In the final race of the season, Samantha Ray, Kayla Owens, Gabrielle Sibilia and Claire Nobles won the silver medal in the 400-yard freestyle relay, finishing in 3:24, fast enough to set another school record.

  1. Omitted from this article, which is 2 1/2 weeks late, is the fact that their coach, Dave Sheetz, was selected A10 Women’s Swimming Coach of the Year.

CONGRATULATIONS TO COACH SHEETZ AND THE WOMEN’S SWIM TEAM !!

Given that there are only 3 winter sports teams, can’t the school newspaper be aware when one of those teams (that doesn’t bounce a basketball) has their conference championships??

One would think the paper would want to celebrate a team that actually has some success.
