The Duquesne women’s basketball may have forgotten how to lose.
After defeating their fellow Atlantic 10 residents, the Fordham Rams, 55-40 Sunday afternoon, the Red & Blue extended their winning streak to 14 games – a program record. The team is now 3-0 in the conference and 15-1 overall.
In the win, the Dukes were led by a veteran-rookie scoring threat consisting of junior forward Amadea Szamosi and freshman guard Chassidy Omogrosso who combined for 35 of the team’s 55 total points. Szamosi knotted 23 points and was one rebound shy of notching a double-double.
Following opening tip-off, it looked as if the Dukes were going slaughter the Rams throughout all four quarters of play after they took a quick 10-0 lead to start the matchup. Fordham, however, wouldn’t die. The Rams never let their opponent take full control and forced the Dukes to play a complete 40-minute game.
Despite the low scoring affair, The Dukes’ had a number of positive moments throughout the game to be proud of aside from the win. The defense held Fordham to 27 percent from the field and 14.3 percent from beyond three-point range.
Even though his team left the court with a win, head coach Dan Burt didn’t believe it played to its full potential thanks to the Rams gritty style of play.
“Playing Fordham is like going to the dentist,” Burt said. “It’s a necessary thing we have to do and it’s not going to be pretty and it’s going to hurt and we had some of that today. I don’t thing we played our best basketball today and I credit Fordham that. They defended us very well.”
Szamosi agreed with her coach that Fordham was a big test compared to past opponents.
“[Fordham] are very good at holding their opponent to a low score, so we tried to focus on getting good [defense] and getting the game going and controlling the tempo,” Szamosi said.
The Dukes look to extend their win streak to 15 games on the road this Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. when they take on the Rhode Island Rams.
It would be great if the student body gave them the support they deserve.
