On Oct. 26, students at Duquesne participated in a “Mocktails” drink-making contest for the annual Alcohol Awareness Week, chiefly sponsored by Greeks Advocating for Mature Management of Alcohol (GAMMA) and DU Cares. Campus organizations competed to create the best non-alcoholic drinks.

At a cost of $10 each, organizations had a chance of winning half of the total proceeds as a prize for having the winning drinks. GAMMA kept the other half for its other Alcohol Awareness events.

“This event brings out some of the best in Greek Life,” said Matt Muzzio, GAMMA’s public relations chair. “It’s one event that we put on that people truly enjoy.”

This year was no different than any other, with organizations ranging from Greek Life chapters to teams representing residence halls to the Panhellenic council, all creating drinks ranging from milkshakes, mock-mojitos, fake moonshine and many more.

For the event, organizations decorated tables and mixed creative drinks to score the most points from the judges panel.  There are awards for the most creative, best tasting and best overall drinks. Starting at 8:30 p.m., organizations had 30 minutes to set up their table. After that, participants had 20 minutes to create their concoction.

At the sound of the announcement  that the event was ready to start, organizations scrambled to make their masterpieces. Shapes ranging from all sizes, drinks of every color of the rainbow and tons of smiles, everyone finished their drink creation within the time limit.

Congratulations are in order for Sigma Nu Fraternity for Most Creative Drink, Towers RAs for the Best Tasting Drink and Delta Chi Fraternity for Best Overall Drink. Sigma Nu made non-alcoholic Ragniss Moonshine, Towers made Baklava Milkshakes and Delta Chi made Shamrock Ale Bomb.

Vinny McGovern, a member of the Delta Chi team, was pleased to win the Best Overall Drink award.

“Winning the Mocktail Mix-Off Competition was one of my biggest accomplishments as an undergrad,” McGovern said. “Couldn’t have done it without an amazing team.”
